Stockholm congestion taxes modified on 1 January 2020
Congestion taxes are modified on 1 January 2020 to improve traffic flow.
This is new:
- new hours and amounts
- congestion tax adjusted to season
- congestion tax introduced the first five weekdays of July
- congestion tax introduced certain days before a public holiday.

New hours and amounts - increased congestion tax during peak hours
In some sections of the road network, congestion begins even before 6.30 a.m. For this reason, an additional congestion tax period is introduced in the morning, between 6.00 and 6.29 a.m.
The tax amounts are raised during certain hours of the day, when traffic peaks.

Congestion taxes adjusted to season
Congestion levels vary during the year. In late spring, and in summer and autumn, traffic density and congestion levels are generally higher than in winter and early spring. The congestion tax will now be adjusted to these variations with the introduction of a peak season and an off-peak season.
During peak season, the tax amount will be raised. The maximum total tax per calendar day will be 135 SEK. (During off-peak season, the maximum amount will be 105 SEK, just like today.)
Peak season is the period between 1 March and the day before Midsummer Eve, and between 15 August and 30 November. The rest of the year is off-peak season.
Congestion tax introduced the first week of July
Congestion tax will now be charged for the first five weekdays of July, except for Saturday, since traffic density and congestion during these five days are considered to reach the same levels as during other times of year when congestion tax is charged.
Congestion tax introduced certain days before a public holiday
Some days before a public holiday, traffic density and congestion are approximately the same as on a regular weekday. Congestion tax will therefore be introduced:
- the day before Good Friday
- the day before Ascension Day
- the day before the Saturday between 31 October and 6 November ("Alla helgons dag")
- 30 April, which is the day before 1 May (if 30 April falls on a weekday other than Saturday)
- 5 June, which is the day before the Swedish national day (if 5 June falls on a weekday other than Saturday).
